Design question
How do we design an online course that will help graduate students identify their values and interests, inform them of current trends in the job market and hiring, and write actionable career goals and resumes that are responsive to technology used in candidate selection?
Proposal
The proposed course design and build document were part of my final project for the course Methods of Learning and Design. It consists of modules aimed to equip students with knowledge and skills on career management preparation, particularly a more systematic approach to conducting a self-assessment, gaining job knowledge, raising market awareness, formulating actionable career goals, and writing a resume.
- Skills and responsibilities: Backward Design, empathy mapping, online course development, storyboarding
- Client: Graduate Career Center at Georgetown University
- Target Learners: Graduate Students
- Tools: Canvas, Panopto, Google Docs
I worked with the Career Center to transform their in-person presentations into an online asynchronous course using Canvas as the primary learning environment. The proposed course was designed based on students’ feedback and preference to learn at their own pace. The online course will also create a pipeline of students who can consult with a career counselor after the students conduct background research on their desired career, and prepare the necessary documents such as a CV, resume, and a cover letter.
